PVC SG5 Resin: A Practical Buying Guide for Industrial Pros

Among all commercial PVC resin grades, SG5 is the most widely used universal specification, balancing processability, mechanical performance and procurement cost. This article answers the two core questions first, then introduces the features, applications and selection criteria of PVC resin SG5, helping buyers match the right material efficiently.

What Is Resin in PVC?

In the PVC industry, “resin” refers to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin — the raw base polymer powder produced by polymerizing vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). It is the pure primary material before any processing and formulation.

PVC resin appears as white fine powder, with no plasticizers, stabilizers, lubricants or fillers added. It only provides the basic polymer matrix, and cannot be directly made into finished products without compounding. In short, resin is the core raw material that constitutes all PVC products.

What Is the Difference Between Resin and PVC?

This is the most frequently asked question for new buyers. The core difference lies in product form and application stage:
  • PVC resin: It is the unprocessed raw material in powder form. It is a semi-finished industrial chemical, only used as production input for plastic processing plants. It has no independent use value without formula adjustment and processing.
  • PVC (finished PVC products): It refers to final products made by mixing PVC resin with various additives (plasticizer, stabilizer, filler, etc.) and then extruding, injection molding, calendering or blow molding. Common PVC pipes, window profiles, films, cable sheaths and plastic containers all fall into this category.

Simply put: PVC resin is the raw material, while PVC generally refers to finished PVC products. All PVC items are made from PVC resin, but resin alone is not a usable end product.

PVC Resin SG5: Core Grade Characteristics

SG5 is the most mainstream universal grade of suspension-process PVC resin in the market, with a polymerization degree of about 1000 and K-value ranging from 66 to 68. It has a balanced performance profile and wide processing adaptability, making it the first choice for most conventional PVC processing.

Key features:
  • Balanced strength and toughness, suitable for both rigid and semi-rigid product production
  • Wide processing window, compatible with extrusion, calendering, injection molding and other processes
  • Stable quality, uniform particle size, easy to disperse and plasticize during compounding
  • Sufficient market supply and high cost performance, suitable for long-term mass procurement

We supply standard SG5 grade PVC resin with stable batch quality and complete inspection documents, supporting bulk package and customized delivery solutions.

Main Industrial Applications of SG5 Grade

Thanks to its universal performance, SG5 PVC resin covers most conventional PVC processing scenarios:
  • Rigid pipes & fittings: Water supply pipes, drainage pipes, electrical conduit pipes and matching pipe fittings
  • Profiles & plates: Window and door profiles, wall panels, foam boards and decorative sheets
  • Film & sheet: Calendered sheets, packaging films and general-purpose industrial films
  • Injection molded products: Various plastic containers, pipe fittings and daily-use plastic parts
  • Wire & cable: Insulation layer and sheath for medium and low voltage wires and cables
  • Other general products: Artificial leather, floor materials and other modified PVC products

Why Choose SG5 Over Other Grades?

For most conventional processing factories, SG5 is the most cost-effective choice:
  • Strong versatility: One grade covers multiple product lines, reducing inventory pressure of multi-grade procurement
  • Mature supply chain: Stable output with reliable quality and short delivery cycle
  • Friendly processing: Wide processing temperature range, low requirement for equipment precision, suitable for most conventional production lines

Common Purchasing FAQs

Q1: Is SG5 suitable for soft PVC products?
SG5 is mainly used for rigid and semi-rigid products. For highly flexible products such as transparent soft films and hoses, SG3 grade with higher polymerization degree is more recommended.

Q2: What is the difference between SG5 and SG7/SG8?
SG7 and SG8 have lower polymerization degree and better melt fluidity, suitable for high-speed injection molding and rigid products with special processing requirements. SG5 has better comprehensive mechanical properties and wider application range.

Q3: What should be noted for storage and transportation?
PVC resin should be stored in a cool, dry and ventilated warehouse, away from fire sources and direct sunlight. It should be protected from moisture and pollution during transportation to avoid affecting processing performance.
